CSS stands for "Cascading Style Sheets." It is a language that works with HTML, but while HTML is tasked with the structure of a page, CSS handles the appearance. CSS allows us to make broad, sweeping changes to the appearance of a website with just a few clicks. For example, changing one line in the style sheet can change the background color or font style on every page of the site.
CSS has been growing over the years in both power and utility. CSS can now produce smooth, pleasing animations and transitions with just a little help from JavaScript. CSS has also helped usher in the wave of responsive webdesign, which allows a single webpage to be displayed in different ways based on the resolution of the screen. Without CSS, most sites would probably be serving a dot M version of each page to visitors on mobile devices, and that's annoying for everyone.
